Racing to Victory: Saratoga Springs High School Alum Brett Beckwith Prepares for World Driving Championships in New Zealand

Saratoga Springs High School alum Brett Beckwith is gearing up to represent the United States at the 2025 World Driving Championships in New Zealand. As the sole American driver in the competition, Beckwith will face off against 10 harness racing drivers from around the world. Despite his young age, Beckwith is excited about the opportunity to showcase his skills on the international stage.

Beckwith comes from a family deeply involved in the horse racing industry, with his mother training horses at Saratoga Harness and his father being a former driver. Taking over the reins at 18, Beckwith fell in love with the thrill and adrenaline rush of harness racing. He will be competing in more than 20 heats across five racecourses in New Zealand, where drivers are randomly matched with horses for each race.

The World Driving Championships in New Zealand will offer Beckwith a unique racing experience, as the country's racing style differs from that in the United States. New Zealand features standing starts instead of the traditional starting gate, adding an extra challenge for the drivers. Despite the differences, Beckwith is eager to adapt and showcase his skills in this new environment.

Having achieved success locally at Saratoga Casino Hotel and earning recognition with the SCH/SHHA Johnny Page Driver Breakthrough award, Beckwith is now focused on preparing for the international competition. He emphasizes the importance of strength and attention to detail when working with 1,000-pound horses, highlighting the physical and mental demands of harness racing at a competitive level.

As Beckwith gears up for the World Driving Championships, he is determined to make his mark on the global stage and represent the United States with pride. With his passion for harness racing and dedication to his craft, Beckwith is ready to take on the challenge and compete against some of the best drivers in the world.
