Virtual Commemoration: Lighting of the Imagine Peace Tower in Honor of John Lennon
Due to hazardous sea conditions in Faxaflói Bay, the planned event to commemorate the lighting of the Peace Column on Viðey Island has been canceled. The occasion, which honors John Lennon, a founding member of The Beatles and a peace advocate, is typically marked with the illumination of the Imagine Peace Tower, a memorial created by Lennon's wife, Yoko Ono. The tower is lit twice a year, on Lennon's birthday (9 October) and the anniversary of his death (8 December).
Today's ceremony, originally scheduled to take place on Viðey Island, will proceed without physical attendees due to the unsafe weather conditions that have led to the cancellation of ferry services to the island. Despite this setback, the Imagine Peace Tower will still be lit at 8:00 pm as planned, symbolizing hope and global unity in line with Yoko Ono's vision.
While the public cannot be present at the event, organizers are encouraging individuals to participate virtually. The lighting of the Imagine Peace Tower will be livestreamed on the memorial's website, offering viewers the opportunity to listen to Lennon's iconic song "Imagine" and contemplate the message of peace that the installation represents.
