Bob Dylan's 'Through the Open Window, 1956-1963': A Deep Dive into Dylan's Early Days

Bob Dylan, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer from Minnesota, is known for sharing outtakes from his career, and he continues this tradition with the upcoming release of "Bootleg Series Volume 18: Through the Open Window, 1956-1963." This eight CD box set, also available in two CD and four LP sets, delves into Dylan's early days, from his time in Minneapolis to his transition to the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early '60s. The collection features rare Columbia Records outtakes and recordings from club dates, informal gatherings, friends' apartments, and jam sessions in musicians' hangouts.

"Through the Open Window" includes recordings from Dylan's home state of Minnesota, such as "Let the Good Times Roll" from 1956 in St. Paul, "I Got a New Girl" from 1959 in Hibbing, and "Jesus Christ" from 1960 in Minneapolis. The box set also includes a seven-song concert from 1961 at Bonnie Beecher's home in Minneapolis. Author and historian Sean Wilentz, in his liner notes essay, describes the collection as a fragment of Dylan's artistic evolution, connecting the past and present through music.

To give fans a taste of the set, Dylan's label has released an outtake of "Rocks and Gravel" recorded in the studio in 1962. This release is part of Dylan's ongoing exploration of his archives, which began with "The Bootleg Series Vol. 1-3: Rare and Unreleased 1961–1991" in 1991. Over the years, Dylan has used the series to share unreleased concerts and delve into various albums and eras, offering fans a deeper look into his musical journey.
