Arrests Made in Boston Vehicle Takeover: Chaos, Illegal Racing, and Police Cruiser Fire

Two individuals were arrested in Boston following a large-scale vehicle takeover event that involved illegal street racing and ended with a police cruiser being set on fire by fireworks. The chaotic scene took place on Mass. Ave and Tremont Street, with over 100 people participating. Julian Bowers, 18, and William Cantwell, 19, both from Rhode Island, were the only ones arrested and arraigned in Roxbury District Court. Despite prosecutors seeking higher bail amounts, the judge set bail at $500 for Bowers and $1,000 for Cantwell.

The men were part of a group that organizes gatherings through social media and messaging platforms, blocking streets with their cars to disrupt traffic flow. They engage in activities like burnouts, donuts, and illegal street races, often live streaming the events. During the incident, one officer's cruiser was targeted, leading to the vehicle being surrounded by individuals throwing fireworks and other objects. The cruiser caught fire and was destroyed, but no officers were injured.

Bowers was charged with various offenses, including malicious destruction of property, disorderly conduct, assault and battery on a police officer, and resisting arrest. Cantwell, on the other hand, faced similar charges along with drug possession after marijuana edibles were found in his possession. The prosecutor highlighted that such incidents are part of a growing trend nationwide, where groups from out of state overwhelm law enforcement.

Both Bowers and Cantwell were ordered to stay out of Boston except for legal matters, wear GPS monitoring bracelets upon release, and are scheduled for a pretrial hearing on November 5. The events underscore the challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with organized groups engaging in illegal activities.
