UK Pubs Prepare for Extended Hours During World Cup 2026

UK pubs are preparing to extend their opening hours until 1am during the World Cup to accommodate late kick-off times. With some matches scheduled to start as late as 2am due to Fifa's efforts to manage extreme heat in North America, bars are expected to stay open later next summer. The Labour Party government source indicated that the World Cup could be designated as an "occasion of exceptional national significance," allowing pubs and bars, which usually close at 11pm, to operate for an additional two hours without special permission.
According to Fifa's schedule, certain matches may kick off at 11pm or even 2am. Fifa Vice-President Victor Montagliani, who also heads the Concacaf organization overseeing the host nations, mentioned that lessons have been learned regarding kick-off times and the impact of heat in the region. He emphasized the importance of ongoing discussions with European and global media to determine the best approach for the tournament.
Montagliani's comments came after the US president's decision to relocate matches from potentially unsafe cities for the World Cup. He stressed that Fifa has the authority to make decisions regarding the tournament, regardless of political influences. While acknowledging Uefa's role in decision-making, Montagliani highlighted the need for collaboration and respect among football governing bodies.
Regarding the proposed expansion to 64 teams in the World Cup, Montagliani expressed reservations shared by Uefa and Asia. He emphasized the success of the Club World Cup and the importance of finding a balance between the number of teams and country quotas for future tournaments. As discussions continue, adjustments may be necessary to address concerns and ensure the tournament's success.
