38th Tokyo International Film Festival: A Showcase of Diverse Films and Talents
The 38th Tokyo International Film Festival is set to feature a diverse lineup of films, with Fan Bingbing starring in "Mother Bhumi" and Zhang Ziyi in "She Has No Name." Fan Bingbing's character in "Mother Bhumi" is a widowed village woman who uses sorcery to protect her community, while Zhang Ziyi plays a Shanghai housewife accused of murder in "She Has No Name." The festival will also showcase films by renowned directors such as Sakamoto Junji, Yamada Yoji, and Chloé Zhao.
The competition section of the festival includes a mix of emerging filmmakers and seasoned auteurs. Titles like "Echoes of Motherhood" by Nakagawa Ryutaro and "Golem in Pompei" by Amos Gitai offer unique storytelling perspectives. Other notable films include "Atropia" by Hailey Gates and "Heads or Tails?" by Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis. The festival will also feature works by Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir and Cambodian master Rithy Panh.
Nippon Cinema Now will highlight the current landscape of Japanese filmmaking, featuring a range of independent voices and international collaborations. The lineup includes films like "Saikai Paradise" by Keiko Tsuruoka and "White Flowers and Fruits" by Yukari Sakamoto. Asian Future will introduce works from emerging regional filmmakers, including "Halo" by Roh Young-wan and "The Old Man and His Car" by Michael Kam. Gala Selections will feature global auteurs like Ari Aster and Korean genre fare like Lim Dae-hee's "Holy Night: Demon Hunters."
The festival will run from Oct. 28 to Nov. 5 at various venues in central Tokyo, including Toho Cinemas Hibiya, Humantrust Cinema Yurakucho, and Marunouchi Piccadilly. With a lineup that spans a wide range of genres and styles, the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival promises to be a celebration of diverse storytelling and cinematic talent.
