Rep. Scott Perry Surveillance: FBI Probe into Election Interference

The FBI conducted surveillance on Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) at his congressional office and home before seizing his cell phone for an investigation into election interference in 2020. The probe, known as “Arctic Frost,” targeted numerous Republican entities following President Trump’s loss in the election. Agents followed Perry in July and August 2022 to gather information for a potential seizure warrant.
The FBI documents revealed that agents tracked Perry at his home near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and at his workplaces in Washington, DC. The surveillance also included observations of Perry at a recreation center in the nation’s capital. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan obtained the records as part of oversight of the Arctic Frost investigation, which was described as a “sensitive election law investigation.”
Questions were raised about the surveillance of Rep. Perry while he was carrying out his duties as a congressman. The FBI’s actions were seen as a potential violation of the separation of powers. The Office of Congressional Affairs was informed of the FBI’s intention to interview Perry. The FBI executed a warrant to seize Perry’s phone while he was on vacation in New Jersey during a congressional recess.
Rep. Perry expressed outrage over the seizure of his phone, criticizing the FBI’s actions as an intrusion into his legislative and personal communications. The FBI’s investigation focused on efforts in Pennsylvania to appoint electors who would falsely vote for Trump and Pence instead of Biden. Perry was alleged to have introduced Jeffrey Clark to Trump in a bid to make him acting attorney general. The FBI also found communications between Perry and Pennsylvania legislators regarding the election certification dispute.
Requests for comments from Perry’s office and the FBI went unanswered. The surveillance and seizure of Perry’s phone raised concerns about government overreach and the protection of constitutional rights. The investigation into election interference continues to be a contentious issue, with implications for the political landscape.
