Raising Hope for Climate Justice: Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of Laudato Si' with Global Leaders
Over 400 religious leaders, climate experts, and political leaders will gather in Castel Gandolfo from October 1-3 for the "Raising Hope for Climate Justice" conference. This event commemorates the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato si', which emphasized the Catholic Church's advocacy for environmental care. Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Governor of California and renowned actor, expressed his dedication to uniting government and grassroots efforts for the environment during a press conference at the Holy See Press Office.
Schwarzenegger highlighted the significant influence that the 400,000 priests in 200,000 parishes worldwide have in driving change if they are educated on environmental issues. He commended the Vatican for its commitment to becoming the first carbon-neutral state and emphasized the importance of practical actions beyond mere discussions. The actor emphasized the need for collective participation in environmental protection, urging people to look beyond skeptics who doubt the feasibility of environmental laws.
During the press conference, various speakers, including Maina Talia, Cardinal Jaime Spengler, Lorna Gold, and Sr. Alessandra Smerilli, discussed the importance of integrating faith, ecology, and culture in addressing environmental challenges. The conference in Castel Gandolfo will feature keynote addresses from climate activists and moments of spiritual and cultural significance over three days. Sr. Smerilli emphasized that the 10th anniversary of Laudato si' signifies a new beginning and renewed commitment to addressing ongoing environmental challenges.
Lorna Gold, Executive Director of the Laudato Si' Movement, anticipates around 1,000 participants at the "Raising Hope for Climate Justice" event, which precedes the COP30 climate conference in Brazil. She stressed the importance of maintaining hope and belief in the possibility of positive change, echoing Pope Francis' encouragement to persevere in challenging times. The conference will introduce the "Laudato Si' 10" pledge to encourage all parties to commit to fulfilling the vision of the 2015 papal encyclical. Gold emphasized the movement's dedication to upholding Pope Francis' legacy and spreading hope through their work in the years to come.
