High-Speed Street Race on Midpoint Bridge Leads to Arrest and Impounded Car

A late-night street race on the Midpoint Bridge resulted in one driver being arrested and his car impounded, while authorities are still searching for a motorcyclist who allegedly reached speeds exceeding 140 mph. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. when Florida Highway Patrol troopers observed a Toyota Camry and a motorcycle accelerating side-by-side near Colonial Boulevard in Fort Myers before racing across the bridge. The Camry was clocked at 124 mph, and the motorcycle exceeded 140 mph.

The Camry was eventually stopped near Country Club Boulevard and Veterans Parkway in Cape Coral, where the driver, identified as David Stone, 24, and a female passenger were found. Stone claimed he was speeding because he needed to use the bathroom, despite passing several gas stations before being pulled over. Stone, who did not have a license, was arrested and faces charges for driving without a license, excessive speed, and racing. His Camry will be impounded for 30 days at his expense.

The motorcyclist, whose license plate was not visible, remains unidentified, and charges are pending once the rider is apprehended. Lt. Greg Bueno of the Florida Highway Patrol criticized the drivers' reckless behavior, emphasizing the dangerous decisions made during the early morning incident.
