Addressing Overstocking Concerns: Weona Park Stud's Commitment to Horse Welfare
A Tasmanian horse breeder has been instructed to find new homes for approximately 100 horses on her property due to concerns raised by the racing community. Following a multi-agency investigation, it was discovered that the property was overstocked and some horses had low body mass. The Tasmanian Racing Integrity Commissioner, Sean Carroll, led the investigation, with Biosecurity Tasmania, TasRacing, and the RSPCA also involved. The breeding stud, Weona Park Stud, located in Tasmania's Southern Midlands, has more than 200 horses across multiple properties, with many of them pregnant. Inspectors found poor "body scores" among the horses but determined that none were at immediate risk. The remaining properties housing Weona Park Stud horses will be inspected to assess the horses' welfare and address community concerns.
Weona Park Stud's manager, Fiona Methorst, acknowledged that the property was overstocked and committed to rehoming around 100 horses within three to six months. She mentioned ongoing efforts to find suitable homes for the horses, including pregnant mares. Methorst indicated that the breeding stud might close after completing the rehoming process due to public backlash. Residents living near the stud's properties expressed concerns about the impact on their quality of life, citing issues like odor, dust, and mud caused by the horses. Methorst denied any mistreatment of the animals, stating that they receive adequate care and regular veterinary checks. TasRacing's Code of Practice for Racehorse Welfare outlines standards for horse care, emphasizing the need for sufficient pasture, segregation for certain horses, and considerations for stocking density to prevent environmental damage.
TasRacing, in collaboration with the RSPCA and Biosecurity Tasmania, is investigating potential breaches of policies or legislation related to the case. The Racing Integrity Commissioner, Sean Carroll, urged individuals with concerns to report them to his office. As the situation unfolds, further actions may be taken to ensure the welfare of the horses and compliance with regulations. The rehoming process initiated by Weona Park Stud reflects a commitment to addressing the overstocking issue and prioritizing the well-being of the animals.
