Tani: A Cross-Cultural Horror Collaboration Between Korea and Thailand

Thai filmmaker Banjong Pisanthanakun has joined forces with South Korean producers for an upcoming psychological horror film titled Tani. The project is a collaboration between Korea and Thailand, with Lewis Taewan Kim producing through Lewis Pictures and Solaire Partners from Korea providing financial support. GDH 559 from Thailand is also on board as a co-production partner. Tani will follow the story of a married Korean man who embarks on a business trip to Thailand and becomes entangled with a mysterious Thai woman, leading him into a nightmarish situation. The film is based on the legend of Nang Tani, a female Thai spirit known to haunt wild banana trees, and will incorporate characters from both Korea and Thailand. Banjong is working with a team of writers from both countries on the script, aiming to offer a fresh perspective on the folklore by introducing a Korean character into the narrative.
Banjong expressed his excitement about adapting the legend of Nang Tani and incorporating a Korean character into the story, which he believes will bring a unique perspective to the folklore. The project is currently in the script stage, with a focus on reinterpreting the traditional Thai legend in a way that has not been explored before. Banjong's previous horror film, The Medium, was a successful collaboration between GDH and South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin, achieving significant box-office success in Korea and Asia in 2021. Tani marks Banjong's second collaboration with South Korea, showcasing his ability to create compelling horror narratives that resonate with audiences across different regions.
Lewis Taewan Kim, the producer behind Tani, has a track record of successful projects, including Jason Yu's Sleep and Hong Eui-jeong's Voice Of Silence, both supported by Solaire Partners. Kim's collaboration with Banjong on Tani highlights the growing partnership between Korean and Thai filmmakers in the horror genre. With the combined expertise of the creative teams from both countries, Tani is poised to deliver a chilling and captivating cinematic experience that blends elements of Korean and Thai folklore.
