The Road to the 106th Memorial Cup: A Look at the Prestigious Junior Hockey Tournament

The journey towards the 106th Memorial Cup presented by Kubota Canada commences today. With 61 CHL teams vying for the coveted trophy, the start of the 50th CHL season marks a fresh beginning for all. The London Knights of the OHL are the reigning champions, having secured their third title in Rimouski last June. However, as a new season unfolds, past achievements fade into the background.

The Memorial Cup holds a significant place in North American sports history, with a tradition that dates back to its inception as the OHA Memorial Cup in 1919. Originally established by the Ontario Hockey Association to honor the fallen soldiers of the First World War, the trophy now pays tribute to all Canadian Military Personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Over the years, the Cup has evolved to represent junior "A" hockey supremacy, awarded to the major junior hockey champions of Canada since 1971.

In 1972, the Memorial Cup transitioned to a round-robin tournament format, replacing the previous play-down system. This format brought together the champions of the WHL, QMJHL, and OHL in a thrilling competition to determine the ultimate winner. Since the adoption of the round-robin format, OHL and WHL teams have each claimed the trophy 19 times, with QMJHL clubs lifting it 14 times.

Recent champions include London (2025) and Saginaw (2024) from the OHL, as well as Quebec (2023), Saint John (2022), Rouyn-Noranda (2019), and Acadie-Bathurst (2018) from the QMJHL. The most recent WHL champion was Edmonton in 2014. The upcoming 2026 Memorial Cup will be hosted at Prospera Place, the home of the Kelowna Rockets, who last hosted and won the tournament in 2004.

As the anticipation builds for the 2026 Memorial Cup, the hockey world eagerly awaits to see which team will emerge victorious in May. Stay tuned for updates and more information on the upcoming tournament.
