The annual Hootin an Hollarin Terrapin Races are a popular event for local children. This free competition allows kids to bring their own terrapins or turtles to participate in the races held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Registration starts at 10 a.m. in front of Shelter Insurance. Due to the high number of terrapins, multiple heats are often required to determine the winners.
During the races, each child places their terrapin in the center circle and releases it to race to the outer circle. The first terrapin to reach the outer circle is declared the winner. Cash prizes are given for first, second, and third place, and the first-place winner of each day also receives a special trophy made by Todd Freise.
To ensure the well-being of the terrapins, organizers request that no paint or alterations be made to the turtles' shells. After the races, all turtles must be returned to their original habitats to safeguard their future survival.
