Empowering Youth Through Basketball: The Story of R.B. Russell Vocational High School's New Court

Winnipeg's North End neighborhood recently welcomed a brand new basketball court at R.B. Russell Vocational High School. The court's grand opening was celebrated with enthusiasm by school officials, community members, and basketball enthusiasts. The vibrant court features a mural titled "Basketball is Medicine" by artist Blake Angeconeb, symbolizing growth, protection, and healing through sport and culture. Inspired by the Manitoba Indigenous Warriorz basketball team's ethos, the court aims to promote inclusivity and provide a safe space for youth to come together and play.

Principal Lindsey Munz expressed her excitement about the positive impact the new court will have on the students and the broader North End community. The facility is not only a place for students to gather and connect but also serves as a hub for basketball enthusiasts in the area. The colorful design and meaningful artwork on the court have garnered praise from students like Shane Daniels, who looks forward to spending time watching his friends play on the court.

The project, with a budget of approximately $200,000, was made possible through a partnership between the Winnipeg School Division, the Sea Bears, and Buckets & Borders. This collaboration marks the fourth new basketball court built by Buckets & Borders in Winnipeg since 2023. The organization's CEO, Justin Lee, expressed gratitude for the community's support and hinted at potential future projects in Winnipeg. The court's high-quality design and amenities have been well-received by community members and basketball players alike.

Daman Morissette, co-founder of Warriorz Basketball, emphasized the importance of providing facilities like the new court to keep youth engaged and on the right path. The state-of-the-art court not only offers a space for skill development but also fosters community relationships and connections. The North End community can take pride in the new court as a symbol of progress and opportunity for youth to thrive and build meaningful connections. The court's impact extends beyond basketball, serving as a beacon of hope and unity for the community.
