Daniel Day-Lewis Returns to Acting in 'Anemone' Directed by Son Ronan

Daniel Day-Lewis recently broke his eight-year retirement from acting to star in the film "Anemone," directed by his son Ronan. The movie's script was co-written by Day-Lewis and Ronan based on their original idea. Day-Lewis had previously announced his retirement in 2017 after his work in "Phantom Thread." This retirement was not his first, as he had taken a break in 1997 to pursue shoemaking in Italy before returning to acting in 2002 for "Gangs of New York."

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Day-Lewis shared that his decision to return to acting was influenced by his desire to collaborate with his son Ronan on a project. "Anemone" features Day-Lewis as a recluse in Northern England whose life is disrupted by the arrival of his brother, played by Sean Bean. The cast also includes Samuel Bottomley, Safia Oakley-Green, and Samantha Morton.

Despite some reservations about returning to the public eye, Day-Lewis was ultimately persuaded by his son to take on a role in "Anemone." He expressed his love for the work of acting but admitted to struggling with certain aspects of the industry that left him feeling drained. However, working with his son reignited his passion for the craft and brought him joy throughout the filming process.

"Anemone" is set to premiere at the New York Film Festival before opening in select theaters on October 3 and expanding nationwide on October 10. Fans can read the full interview with Day-Lewis on Rolling Stone's website.
