Formula 1 teams have been attracting significant sponsorship revenue, with a combined $2 billion generated last year, according to a report by SponsorUnited. F1 teams surpassed other leagues in sponsorship revenue, with an average deal size of $6 million, eight times higher than the NFL's average. Private markets firms, like Carlyle, are increasingly forming partnerships with sports franchises to enhance brand visibility and appeal to individual retail investors. Apollo and Blue Owl have also pursued sponsorship deals in professional golf and tennis.
Carlyle's wealth segment has experienced rapid growth, raising over $60 billion since its inception and nearly doubling its assets under management in two years. The partnership with Red Bull marks Carlyle as the exclusive partner in the investment management industry for the F1 team, representing the first collaboration between an F1 team and a major global private markets firm. Oracle Red Bull Racing's CEO and team principal, Laurent Mekies, expressed excitement about the long-term perspective and extensive network that Carlyle brings to the partnership.
According to the SponsorUnited report, the technology sector led F1 team sponsorship revenue, contributing $543 million, followed by financial services with $379 million. AIX Investment Group recently sponsored driver Pierre Gasly for the 2025 season, featuring its logo on the side panel of his helmet. The partnership between Carlyle and Oracle Red Bull Racing signifies a strategic move to leverage the growing interest in private markets among investors and expand brand presence in the competitive world of Formula 1.
