Alex Formenton's NHL Future: Uncertainty and Potential Return

Alex Formenton's future in the National Hockey League is uncertain as he awaits clearance to return to the league. Following his acquittal of sexual assault charges in July, Formenton re-signed with HC Ambri-Piotta in the Swiss league. The Ottawa Senators still hold his NHL rights after making a qualifying offer, which Formenton did not sign before it expired. The Senators attempted to trade his rights but faced no interest due to the ongoing investigation. Formenton, along with four other players, remains ineligible to play in the NHL until commissioner Gary Bettman clears them.

Steve Staios, the Senators' president of hockey operations and general manager, declined to comment on the possibility of Formenton returning to the team. The league stated that the players involved in the case must wait for the judge's findings to be reviewed before being eligible to play in the NHL again. Formenton previously signed with Ambri-Piotta in 2022 and took a leave of absence during the 2023-24 season to address the criminal charge.

Formenton's current contract with Ambri-Piotta runs until the Christmas break, indicating his desire to showcase his skills to the Senators and other NHL teams. As a second-round pick in the 2017 NHL draft, Formenton must sign an NHL contract by December 1 to potentially return to the league this season. The Senators could trade his rights if he receives clearance from the league before the deadline. Ottawa center Tim Stutzle expressed his support for Formenton's decision to play in Switzerland and wished him success in his endeavors.
