Newfoundland Regiment Hockey Club Gears Up for Inaugural Season with Strong Fan Support
With the first game approaching, season ticket holders had the opportunity to observe a Newfoundland Regiment team practice. The President of the Newfoundland Regiment Hockey Club, Glenn Stanford, mentioned that there are approximately 2,400 season ticket holders for the new N.L. team, marking one of the highest numbers of season tickets sold for hockey in the province in the last 35 years. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team will make their debut under the Newfoundland Regiment name at the Mary Brown's Centre on Sept. 18. The team name, paying tribute to the 789 Newfoundland soldiers who served in the First World War, has garnered a respectful and reverent sentiment among hockey enthusiasts in the province. The atmosphere is described as something truly special by Stanford, who noted that around 1,000 season ticket holders attended the open practice.
Newfoundland Regiment player Dawson Sharkey expressed his delight at the overwhelming support from fans, especially as he had never experienced such a turnout before. Sharkey, originally from PEI, is eager to engage with the passionate fan base in St. John's. Coach Gordie Dwyer echoed the excitement of the team as they hit the ice at the Mary Brown's Centre for the first time, emphasizing the anticipation since the team's announcement.
In addition to the open practice, the team will be involved in a hockey showcase on Sept. 13 to support N.L. wildfire relief. The event will feature a mini three-on-three tournament involving Newfoundland Regiment players, with proceeds being donated to the Canadian Red Cross. Dwyer highlighted the importance of integrating players into the community, recognizing the strong hockey culture in St. John's and the special opportunity to be part of it.
