Born to Run 50th Anniversary Symposium: A Celebration of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

Bruce Springsteen concluded the Born to Run 50th anniversary symposium at Monmouth University’s Pollack Theatre with an electrifying performance featuring a unique lineup of original and current E Street Band members. The rare collaboration brought together musicians from different eras of the band, creating what Springsteen referred to as “the full E Street Band” for the 700-capacity audience. The set included iconic songs like “Thunder Road” and “Born to Run”, with drummer Ernest Carter impressively executing a challenging drum fill.
The day-long symposium, hosted by the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Centre for American Music, featured panels with key figures involved in the creation of the album. E Street Band members, engineer Jimmy Iovine, former and current managers, photographer Eric Meola, and Columbia Records employees shared behind-the-scenes stories and insights. Springsteen himself shared anecdotes about the inspiration behind “Born to Run” and his creative process.
Former manager Mike Appel recounted his negotiations for media coverage, while Iovine shared Springsteen’s reaction to listening to the album years later. Photographer Meola described the energy and exhaustion captured during the album cover shoot, highlighting the dedication of the musicians. Columbia Records employees discussed their efforts to promote an artist who initially struggled to gain recognition.
