Empowering Colorado Youth: Tackling Financial Barriers in Youth Sports Participation
Youth sports participation in Colorado is facing financial challenges, with the rising costs of sports activities preventing many children from taking part. To address this issue, Colorado Youth Sports Giving Day has been launched, aiming to remove financial barriers hindering kids from joining sports. Families in the U.S. spent over $1,000 on their child's primary sport in 2023, a significant increase from 2019, with expenses like team registrations, camps, travel, and private lessons being major cost factors. This financial burden has led to lower participation rates, particularly among children from low-income families and communities of color, causing many to drop out of sports by age 11 due to affordability issues.
The Daniels Fund, the Aspen Institute Project Play, and various nonprofits have joined forces to alleviate the financial strain on families. Donations made during the campaign period, which runs until Sept. 17, will be matched up to $150,000. The initiative will kick off at Coors Field, where the Colorado Rockies will contribute a portion of ticket sales from their game against the San Francisco Giants. Supporters can also make direct donations online at coloradogives.org. Local organizations like Soccer City USA in Aurora have already seen the positive impact of the campaign, with Executive Director Curtis Gardner highlighting the importance of sports in children's lives and the critical role of youth sports organizations in the community.
Youth Sports Giving Day has enabled organizations like Soccer City USA to expand their reach and serve more children through after-school programs. Thanks to donations, the number of kids benefiting from their programs has increased from 1,200 to 1,600, with registration fees being subsidized to make sports more accessible. The campaign not only showcases the essential work of youth sports organizations but also demonstrates the tangible impact of community support in providing opportunities for children to engage in sports and physical activities.
