Rising Star: Noa Ta'amu's Journey to Hockey Success

Alofa Tunoa “Noa” Ta’amu, a 17-year-old defenseman for the Edmonton team in the Western Hockey League, has made a name for himself in the sport. Despite his father's expectations for him to pursue football, Noa's love for hockey prevailed. He recently achieved success as a member of the U.S. Under-18 Men’s Select team, winning the gold medal at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup tournament in Slovakia, marking the U.S.'s first victory in the competition since 2003.

Noa, hailing from San Diego, impressed with his performance at the tournament, contributing one assist in five games. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 229 pounds, he showcased his skills on the ice, demonstrating his potential as a promising defenseman. His journey in hockey began when his Canadian grandfather introduced him to the sport, diverging from his father's football background.

Having played for the Los Angeles Jr. Kings program, Noa's rookie season with Edmonton saw him tally six points in 43 games. His experience at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup further solidified his abilities, with his impact extending beyond scoring points. Noa's defensive prowess and penalty-killing skills were instrumental in the team's success, earning praise from Rod Braceful, director of player personnel for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program.

Looking ahead, Noa aims to continue his development with Edmonton in the upcoming season and position himself for the 2026 NHL Draft. With a newfound confidence from his gold medal win, he is eager to make a significant impact on the ice under the guidance of new coach Jason Smith. Noa's parents, particularly his father Ed Ta’amu, have been supportive of his hockey journey, embracing a sport that was once unfamiliar to them.

As Noa continues to excel in hockey, his father takes pride in his son's achievements, relishing the opportunity to witness him shine in a sport that has opened up new horizons for their family. Despite his father's football background, Noa's passion for hockey has allowed him to carve his path in the sport, showcasing his talent and determination on the ice. With a supportive family by his side, Noa is poised to make his mark in the hockey world and continue to make them proud.
