New Edition Honored with 'New Edition Day' Celebration in Boston: A Look Back at the Iconic Group's Legacy

Before the era of boy bands like Backstreet Boys and BTS, there was a pioneering group from Boston known as New Edition. The men from Roxbury have made a significant impact on the music industry and their community. The City of Boston has designated a special day, "New Edition Day," to honor the group, complete with a block party and street renaming.

NBC10 Boston's Latoyia Edwards had a conversation with New Edition's Ricky Bell and Johnny Gill in anticipation of the celebration. Bell reminisced about the group's first hit, "Candy Girl," which marked the beginning of their chart-topping success. Over the past 42 years, members Bell, Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, and later Gill have achieved multiplatinum status with their music.

Reflecting on their journey, Gill emphasized the hard work and dedication that New Edition has put into their music for their fans. Mayor Michelle Wu will officially rename Dearborn Street as "New Edition Way" during a ceremony at the corner of Albany and Ambrose streets. The event will be livestreamed for fans to watch.

Bell expressed his gratitude for the recognition, noting the significance of having a street named after the group where future generations can visit and learn about their beginnings. The legacy of New Edition continues to inspire fans and musicians alike, solidifying their place in music history.
