BGC Ottawa's Sports and Leadership League: Empowering Youth Through Basketball and Life Skills

BGC Ottawa recently concluded its Sports and Leadership League season with basketball playoff finals at Carleton University. The league, which includes various sports, is a year-round program with approximately 1,500 participants from different BGC Clubhouses in Ottawa. The basketball league involves teams from all four BGC Clubhouses and other communities, providing a platform for youth from low-income backgrounds to participate. The program offers free transportation and aims to teach valuable life skills to the youth, emphasizing discipline and respect for authority figures. The program is funded through private donors and fundraising efforts, with the hope that participants will give back to the community in the future. Despite financial challenges, the program continues to grow, with basketball being a key focus for BGC Ottawa.
