Medvedev's U.S. Open Outburst: A Costly Racket Smash

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev was fined $42,500 by the U.S. Open for his outburst during a first-round match. The fine included $30,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and $12,500 for racket abuse. Medvedev destroyed his racket by repeatedly hitting it against his sideline chair after a photographer walked onto the court during the match. The incident occurred when opponent Benjamin Bonzi was close to winning the match, leading 5-4 in the third set. The photographer's credential was later revoked, and play was delayed for more than six minutes as Medvedev argued with the chair umpire, Greg Allensworth. Despite winning the third and fourth sets, Medvedev eventually lost the match 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 0-6, 6-4. This marked Medvedev's third consecutive first-round exit in a Grand Slam tournament, following his loss at Wimbledon last month.
