Enhanced Security Measures Implemented at Calverton Enterprise Park Drag Racing Events

Riverhead Town has implemented stricter security measures at the Calverton Enterprise Park drag racing events following an incident where one attendee stabbed another with a screwdriver. The promoter of the event, Peter Scalzo, mentioned that the new security protocols involve having a Riverhead Police officer present at each event. Due to the increased security requirements, Scalzo has decided to cancel several event dates and raise admission prices by $5 to cover the additional costs.
The altercation that occurred at the event involved two individuals who had been feuding on Facebook prior to the incident. Despite one person stabbing the other with a screwdriver, the victim was not seriously injured and even participated in a race later that night. The victim chose not to press charges, and both individuals have been banned from future events. Riverhead Police Chief Ed Frost declined to comment on the incident, stating that the investigation is ongoing.
The town of Riverhead, which owns the runway where the drag racing events take place, is requiring Scalzo to have a police officer on-site during events at a cost of $850 per day. Additionally, Scalzo must hire three additional security guards to patrol the event. Scalzo emphasized the importance of complying with the town's security requirements to ensure the safety of attendees, especially families with children.
To offset the added expenses, Scalzo has raised admission prices by $5 and canceled five Sunday events. Tickets purchased for the canceled dates can be used for another event or refunded. Supervisor Tim Hubbard mentioned that the incident on Saturday was a contributing factor to the increased security measures, but discussions about enhancing safety had been ongoing due to the growing attendance at the events.
The popularity of the drag racing events has been on the rise, with approximately 1,400 people attending the recent event. The use of a traction compound, permitted by the town, has attracted more participants to the races. Scalzo expressed his desire to continue organizing drag racing events at EPCAL, highlighting the success of the Race Track, Not Street events that have expanded to include drifting and go-kart racing on select dates.
In conclusion, the safety and security of attendees at the Calverton Enterprise Park drag racing events are a top priority for both the event promoter and the town of Riverhead. The implementation of increased security measures aims to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants and spectators.
