Venice Film Festival 2025: Francis Ford Coppola to Honor Werner Herzog with Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement

The Venice Film Festival has enlisted Francis Ford Coppola to deliver a speech honoring Werner Herzog during the festival's opening ceremony. Herzog, known for films like "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" and "Fitzcarraldo," will receive the 2025 Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, presented by Coppola on August 27. Coppola recently underwent a medical procedure in Rome but will be in attendance at the festival. The festival will kick off with Paolo Sorrentino's "La Grazia," starring Toni Servillo.

Herzog will premiere his documentary "Ghost Elephants" at the festival, which follows the search for a herd of elusive elephants in Angola. The film will be screened out-of-competition, and Herzog will also hold a masterclass. His next feature film, "Bucking Fastard," features Kate and Rooney Mara. Meanwhile, a documentary about Coppola's passion project, "Megalopolis," titled "Megadoc," will be shown in the Venice Classics section. Coppola previously received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 1992.

The Venice Film Festival's 82nd edition will take place from August 27 to September 6. It promises to be a celebration of cinematic excellence and a showcase of the works of acclaimed directors like Herzog and Coppola.
