Chinese Box Office Report: 'The Shadow's Edge' Dominates Second Weekend, 'Nobody' and 'Dead to Rights' Hold Strong

"The Shadow's Edge," a thriller by iQiYi Pictures, dominated the Chinese box office in its second weekend, raking in RMB182.9 million ($25.4 million). Directed by Larry Yang and starring Jackie Chan, the film follows retired surveillance expert Wong Tak-Chung as he tracks a high-tech heist orchestrated by the elusive "Wolf King." With the help of rookie cop He Qiuguo, they confront the cunning Fu Longsheng and his criminal gang. The movie secured the top spot in China and ranked third globally.
In second place was Shanghai Animation Film's "Nobody," which earned $19.2 million, bringing its total to $175.3 million. Directed by Yu Shui, the film reimagines the classic mythology of "Journey to the West" through the perspective of minor demons on a spiritual journey. It held the fourth spot on the global chart.
"Dead to Rights," produced by China Film, maintained its strong performance in third place, grossing $11.3 million and reaching a cumulative total of $381.4 million. Directed by Shen Ao and set during the 1937 Nanjing Massacre, the film follows A Chang, a postman who poses as a photo developer to aid Chinese soldiers and civilians under Japanese occupation. It ranked sixth globally.
New Line Cinema's horror film "Final Destination: Bloodlines" debuted in fourth place with $8.4 million, while Universal's animated feature "The Bad Guys 2" rounded out the top five with $4.6 million, bringing its total to $16.5 million.
The weekend box office in China totaled $78.3 million, boosting the country's year-to-date box office revenue to $5.32 billion, a 17.9% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The Chinese film industry continues to thrive with a diverse range of genres captivating audiences both domestically and globally.
