The Rise and Fall of the 'Saw' Franchise: A Look Back at the Series' Legacy

For seven years, the "Saw" franchise delighted audiences with a new installment every Halloween, starting with the original film directed by James Wan in 2004. The series gained popularity due to its dark themes and low-budget success. Subsequent films continued to be profitable, with "Saw 3D" being the most expensive but still a box office hit. However, by 2010, the series seemed to have run its course. In 2017, Lionsgate revived the franchise with "Jigsaw," followed by "Spiral" in 2021 and "Saw X" in 2023, all of which were successful at the box office.
Plans for a "Saw XI" were in motion, but the project ultimately fell apart after the rights to the series were acquired by Blumhouse. The delay in production and creative differences between producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg led to the cancellation of "Saw XI." Despite initial plans and a completed script, the film was abandoned, signaling the end of the franchise for the time being.
The purchase of the "Saw" rights by Blumhouse in 2025 marked a new chapter for the series, but the anticipated "Saw XI" was ultimately scrapped due to disagreements between the producers. The decision to halt production on the film was a result of creative differences and a lack of interest in continuing the franchise. As a result, fans will have to wait to see if the "Saw" series will be revived in the future.
