FTC Lawsuit Exposes Ticket Broker's Deceptive Practices in Ticket Resale Market

A ticket broker based in Pikesville is facing a lawsuit from the Federal Trade Commission for allegedly using fake names, credit cards, and SIM cards to circumvent Ticketmaster restrictions and resell tickets at inflated prices. The broker's various businesses, including TotalTickets.com, Epic Seats, and Totally Tix LLC, reportedly generated $5.6 million in revenue by purchasing hundreds of thousands of tickets between June 2022 and December 2023.
The FTC's complaint specifically mentioned the broker's activities related to Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, where they acquired 2,280 tickets for 38 different concerts, exceeding the six-ticket limit per show. The tickets were then resold at more than double their original price, resulting in over $1 million in revenue for the broker. In one instance, the broker used 49 different accounts to purchase 273 tickets for a single Swift concert.
The lawsuit underscores the alleged deceptive practices employed by the ticket broker to profit from high-demand events. The FTC's legal action aims to address the unlawful ticket purchasing and reselling tactics employed by the broker, which have reportedly impacted consumers and the ticketing industry.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and fairness in ticket sales, as well as the need for regulatory oversight to prevent fraudulent practices in the ticket resale market. Consumers are encouraged to be cautious when purchasing tickets from third-party sellers and to report any suspicious or unethical behavior to the appropriate authorities.
