Des Moines Bridge Protest: Unity in the Face of Adversity

A member of an organization involved in bridge visibility protests in Des Moines recounted a disturbing incident where a man allegedly assaulted a protester and vandalized signs during a demonstration. The Des Moines Police have charged Bradley Jay Nall, 68, with assault and criminal mischief following the incident on August 12. Nall reportedly stopped his vehicle on the 56th Street bridge over I-235 and aggressively confronted the protesters, tearing down their signs that read "Trump = Hitler."

Heather Ryan, a protester present during the altercation, described the man's behavior as aggressive and intimidating, stating that he tore down their signs and threw one at her. The confrontation, captured on video, showed Nall yelling at the protesters while removing the signs. Despite the unsettling experience, Ryan emphasized that the incident only fueled their determination to continue their protests with a message that resonated with many.

Following the incident, a larger group of around two dozen people gathered on the bridge for another protest, showing solidarity with the initial group and reinforcing their message. Despite attempts to contact Nall, including through a fundraising page, he could not be reached for comment. Ryan expressed that the incident had the opposite effect of what was intended, as it strengthened their resolve and garnered more support for their cause.

The incident, while unsettling, served to unite the protesters and amplify their message, demonstrating that acts of aggression would not deter them from advocating for their beliefs. The group's resilience in the face of adversity showcased their commitment to their cause and the importance of standing up for what they believe in.
