Transforming a Garage into a Master Suite: A Family's Renovation Journey

A family of five faced the challenge of limited space in their 1,920-square-foot house in Eastern Shore, Va. Instead of moving, they decided to renovate their attached garage into a master suite to accommodate their growing family. The renovation allowed each child to have their own bedroom while keeping the family in the home they love.

Shannon Boggs and her husband made the decision to renovate after realizing their current space was no longer sufficient for their needs. They considered an addition but found that the garage was too small to fit a car comfortably. To visualize the transformation, they taped off the garage and planned a new master bedroom and bathroom suite with a walk-in closet and additional storage.

The renovation project was completed in two phases. The first phase involved transforming the dining room into a mudroom and connecting it to the kitchen by removing a load-bearing wall. They also converted a full bathroom into a half bath with laundry space. The second phase, the garage conversion, was completed by late April 2025, providing the family with a functional new layout.

Despite the challenges of living through the renovation process with contractors constantly in and out of the house, the family was thrilled with the outcome. The children were excited to have their own spaces and were eager to start decorating. The renovation cost approximately $65,000, saving the family money compared to buying a new home or doing a full addition.

In the end, the Boggs family was happy with their decision to renovate and create a space that met their needs. They have made many memories in their home and felt that it was worth the effort to stay and improve their living space rather than moving. The renovation allowed them to customize their home to their liking and create a comfortable and functional space for their family.
