Capturing the King: Historic Elvis Photos from Memphis Photographers

In 1954, Elvis Presley visited the Memphis Press-Scimitar office for his first newspaper portrait, marking the beginning of a long history of photographs taken by Memphis photographers from both the Press-Scimitar and The Commercial Appeal. To commemorate the 2025 edition of Elvis Week, we are showcasing some historic Elvis photos from our archives, some of which have never been seen before, while others are iconic images of the King. From concerts to glimpses inside Graceland to football games, our photographers have captured various moments of Elvis's life.

One notable event captured by our photographers was Elvis Presley playing touch football at the Dave Wells Community Center in Memphis in 1956, shortly after the premiere of his first movie, "Love Me Tender." Hundreds of spectators gathered to watch Elvis showcase his football skills. Additionally, Elvis spent two years in the Army, being inducted in 1958 and discharged in 1960. Photos from his military career are also featured in our gallery.

Sixty years ago, Elvis Presley granted a reporter and a photographer from The Commercial Appeal access to his Graceland home for an interview. During the interview, Elvis discussed various topics, including Ann-Margret, the Beatles, and marriage. He expressed his hope of finding the right girl and starting a family. Another significant moment in Elvis's life was when he was named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of America by the Jaycees in 1971, which brought tears to his eyes.

While Elvis never toured outside North America, he was one of the most successful touring artists in the region. His performances across the U.S. were met with great enthusiasm from fans. In 1976, Elvis performed at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, marking his final concert in the city where he recorded his debut single 22 years earlier. Following Elvis's passing in 1977, thousands of fans gathered at Graceland to pay their respects, and newspapers across the U.S. covered the news of his death extensively.

Despite his passing 48 years ago, Elvis Presley's legacy continues to be celebrated during Elvis Week at Graceland every August, attracting thousands of fans. The event serves as a tribute to the King's life and impact on music and popular culture. Explore photos from past Elvis Weeks in our gallery to relive the moments of this annual celebration.
