British Cyclist Matt Richardson Shatters World Record in 200m Flying Start

British cyclist Matt Richardson has broken his own world record in the 200m flying start, achieving this feat just a day after becoming the first cyclist to complete the distance in under nine seconds. Richardson, 26, has now set the record for the flying 200m three times, initially holding the record in 2024 while competing for Australia at the Paris Olympics. He surpassed Dutch cyclist Harrie Lavreysen's previous record with a time of 8.941 seconds on Thursday and improved upon that time with a remarkable 8.857-second run on Friday in Konya, Turkey. Richardson expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating that he knew he had more potential after his previous ride and was pleased to have executed his race plan effectively.
Born in Kent, Richardson moved to Western Australia at the age of nine and maintained dual citizenship during his 16-year stay in the country. In August 2024, he switched his nationality back to Britain. The flying 200m event is not a championship medal event but serves as a qualifying race to determine the seeding of riders in the match sprint discipline. Richardson's impressive performances have solidified his status as a top contender in the world of cycling, showcasing his talent and determination to continually push his limits and set new records.
