Rental Family" to Shine at BFI London Film Festival: A Comedy-Drama Exploration of Relationships

Searchlight Pictures’ film "Rental Family" has been selected as the American Express Gala presentation at the 69th BFI London Film Festival. Directed by Hikari, the comedy-drama features Brendan Fraser, Hira Takehiro, Yamamoto Mari, Shannon Mahina Gorman, and Emoto Akira. The story follows an American performer who joins a Japanese company that offers temporary family members for hire, leading to unexpected connections that challenge his views on relationships. The film will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and is produced by Eddie Vaisman, Julie Lebedev, Hikari, and Yamaguchi Shin. Fraser and Hikari will attend the U.K. premiere on Oct. 16 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall.
BFI London Film Festival Director Kristy Matheson expressed excitement about showcasing Hikari's latest work, praising Fraser's performance and the film's exploration of human relationships with humor and generosity. Hikari shared her gratitude for returning to the festival with "Rental Family," a story that delves into the quest for connection and friendship in modern Tokyo. The festival, in partnership with American Express, will run from Oct. 8 to Oct. 19, featuring screenings at various venues in London and across the U.K., including Glasgow, Manchester, and Bristol. The full festival program will be announced on Sept. 3, and "Rental Family" is set for a U.K. release in January through Searchlight Pictures.
