Remembering Bobby Whitlock: A Musical Journey from Memphis to Derek and the Dominos

Bobby Whitlock, a talented singer-songwriter and keyboardist from Memphis, who co-founded Derek and the Dominos with Eric Clapton and contributed to numerous iconic records in the 1960s and ‘70s, has passed away at the age of 77. According to his manager Carol Kaye, Whitlock died at his home in Texas after a short battle with cancer on August 10.
Whitlock is most recognized for his collaboration with Clapton in Derek and the Dominos during the early ‘70s, where they released the acclaimed album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" in 1970. The album featured the hit song ‘Layla’ and other tracks like ‘Bell Bottom Blues,’ which Whitlock wrote and sang. However, his musical journey extends beyond his time with the band.
Starting his career in the late 1960s in the vibrant Memphis music scene, Whitlock became the first white artist signed to Stax Records. He gained experience performing with renowned R&B artists such as Sam & Dave and Booker T. & the M.G.’s. Joining Delaney & Bonnie in 1969, a rock and soul collective, Whitlock contributed his keyboard and vocal skills to their albums "Home" and "Accept No Substitute."
Through his association with Delaney & Bonnie, Whitlock crossed paths with Clapton and George Harrison. He played on Clapton's self-titled album in 1970 and Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" in the same year. Whitlock's musical contributions extended to albums by artists like Dr. John, Doris Troy, and the Rolling Stones' "Exile on Main Street."
Following the breakup of Derek and the Dominos, Whitlock embarked on a solo career in 1972, releasing albums such as "Bobby Whitlock" and "Raw Velvet." He took a hiatus from the music industry in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, returning with the album "It’s About Time" in 1999. Whitlock continued to release music with his wife CoCo Carmel, with whom he collaborated on live and studio albums until 2013.
Bobby Whitlock's musical legacy spans decades, showcasing his talent as a versatile musician and songwriter. His contributions to the music industry will be remembered by fans and fellow artists alike.
