Managing the Threat of Glacier Outburst Flooding in Juneau: Challenges and Solutions

An ice dam formed by Alaska's Mendenhall Glacier is causing concern as it releases a massive amount of rainwater and snowmelt downstream, prompting officials to urge residents in Juneau to evacuate. The glacier acts as a barrier for Suicide Basin, which fills with water each spring and summer. The water pressure eventually breaks through the dam, leading to flooding in the area.

The annual flooding from the basin has caused damage to homes and properties in recent years, with the threat of glacier outburst flooding looming over Juneau since 2011. The rapid rise in water levels poses a significant risk to the community, with record flooding occurring in 2023 and 2024, damaging nearly 300 residences.

To mitigate the impact of potential flooding, city officials have collaborated with state, federal, and tribal entities to install a temporary levee along the riverbank. This measure aims to protect over 460 properties from flood levels similar to those experienced in the previous year. However, residents are concerned about the timeline for implementing a more permanent solution, as outburst floods are expected to continue for the next few decades.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is conducting a comprehensive study of the region to explore long-term solutions to address the recurring flooding issue. While the glacier continues to act as an ice dam, the threat of outburst floods will persist for the foreseeable future. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and prepared for potential evacuation orders as the situation unfolds.
