Equine Welfare and Aftercare at Hipódromo Camarero: Addressing Concerns and Commitment to Horse Well-Being

1/ST Racing recently made the decision to discontinue the simulcast signal from Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita Park to Hipódromo Camarero. In response to concerns raised, we want to address the welfare, safety, and aftercare of racehorses in Puerto Rico.

Hipódromo Camarero operates under strict government regulations for horse verification, medication control, and welfare, following protocols similar to U.S. racetracks. The facility works with U.S.-educated, licensed, and accredited veterinarians to ensure the well-being of the horses.

Racing at Hipódromo Camarero is year-round, leading to a larger number of active horses compared to jurisdictions with shorter seasons. The facility has faced challenges due to horses from the U.S. continuing their racing careers in Puerto Rico, impacting aftercare and end-of-care decisions.

Euthanasia at Hipódromo Camarero is only authorized by licensed veterinarians based on clinical justifications to prevent unnecessary suffering. The majority of horses are cared for, rehabilitated, and successfully retired from racing, contrary to inaccurate statistics.

The Camarero Racetrack has undergone multiple technical evaluations since 2022 to ensure safety and optimal conditions. Experts have inspected the track regularly, leading to continuous improvements and compliance with regulatory requirements.

There has been a significant decrease in euthanasias at Hipódromo Camarero in 2025, demonstrating ongoing improvements in care, injury prevention, and rehabilitation efforts. The facility has invested in medical treatment to keep horses healthy and active.

Despite differences with the Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare (CTA), Hipódromo Camarero supports aftercare efforts. An adoption program has been launched, and collaboration with Siesta Alegre Inc. has expanded options for retired racehorses.

Isolated incidents highlighted by the CTA are addressed through enforcement of animal protection laws in Puerto Rico. The facility remains committed to industry standards and is open to dialogue and partnership to enhance protocols.

Hipódromo Camarero emphasizes transparency, collaboration, and high standards of equine care. The facility is dedicated to working with industry partners to ensure all horses receive proper care and opportunities during and after their racing careers.
