Legends and Rising Stars: The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in Carthage recently inducted its newest members, including Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel, who have been champions of western swing for over 55 years. Benson founded the group in 1970 in West Virginia before relocating to Austin, Texas in 1974. Their hits include Route 66, Miles and Miles of Texas, Hot Rod Lincoln, and The Letter That Johnny Walker Read. Benson has no plans of slowing down and draws inspiration from his mentor Willie Nelson, who is still performing at 92.
Tommy Horton, originally from Los Angeles but raised in Tyler, started his music career playing at honky-tonks and later joined the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport. His hits include Honky-Tonk Man, The Battle of New Orleans, and North to Alaska. Horton, known as "The Singing Fisherman," had a love for fishing and music, as seen in the fishing lures displayed in his case at the TCMHOF. Despite his tragic death in 1960, Horton's legacy lives on through his music.
The induction ceremony also featured performances by special guests Clay Cooper, The Malpass Brothers, Linda Davis, Lang Scott, Dallas Wayne, and a Hee-Haw tribute with Jana Jae, Misty Rowe, and Buddy Alan Owens. State Rep. Joanne Shofner announced Carthage as the Country Music Capital of Texas. The event highlighted both the past and future of country music, with 14-year-old Luke Moody impressing the audience with his fiddle and singing skills, winning the amateur talent contest and performing Vince Gill's When I Call Your Name.
The weekend celebration honored the rich history of country music while showcasing emerging talent like Luke Moody, who aspires to continue performing and pursue music law as a backup plan. The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame continues to recognize and celebrate the contributions of artists who have shaped the genre, ensuring their legacy lives on for future generations.
