Navigating Religious Conversations in a New Community: Setting Boundaries and Prioritizing Comfort

Dear Eric: I recently moved to a new community and have been repeatedly asked by older residents about my church affiliation. I have not attended church in years due to negative experiences in the past. One resident in particular has expressed prejudiced views, claiming that the Bible prohibits interracial marriage due to different races having their own diseases. I have not addressed his hateful language directly. How can I politely convey that I do not wish to discuss religion or attend church with these individuals? – Still Trying to Be Polite.

Dear Polite: It is important to remember that there are various churches and interpretations of religious teachings. It is unfortunate that one resident holds such prejudiced beliefs, but it is crucial to recognize that his views may not be representative of the entire community. If you encounter such hateful language, you have the right to set boundaries and firmly express that you do not wish to engage in those discussions. As for the other residents, you can simply inform them that you do not attend church and redirect the conversation. It is acceptable to assert your boundaries and prioritize your comfort in these interactions.
