Exploring Boundaries: The 2025 New York Film Festival Currents Lineup

The 2025 New York Film Festival has unveiled its Currents lineup, featuring a diverse selection of 16 feature films and 24 short films from 28 countries. The centerpiece of the Currents section is the U.S. premiere of Ben Rivers' Mare's Nest, a mysterious road movie set in a post-apocalyptic world dominated by children. Other notable films in the lineup include Radu Jude's Dracula and Kamal Aljafari's With Hasan in Gaza.

Artistic director Dennis Lim expressed excitement about the lineup, highlighting the innovative and diverse cinematic language showcased in this year's selections. The films explore a range of styles and forms, offering fresh perspectives on the past and present while pushing the boundaries of storytelling.

The Currents lineup will feature the world premiere of Sharon Lockhart's Windward and the North American premieres of several feature films, including Tsai Ming-liang's Back Home/Hui Jia, Lucio Castro's Drunken Noodles, and Masao Adachi's Escape/Toso. Additionally, U.S. premieres include Orian Barki and Meriem Bennani's Bouchra, Alexandre Koberidze's Dry Leaf, and Rhayne Vermette's Levers.

The New York premieres in the Currents section include Stillz's Barrio Triste and Lee Anne Schmitt's Evidence. The festival's main slate, which includes opening night film After the Hunt, centerpiece film Father Mother Sister Brother, and closing night film Is This Thing On?, promises a diverse and compelling lineup of 34 films.

The 63rd New York Film Festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center, is scheduled to take place from September 26 to October 13, offering audiences a rich cinematic experience with a mix of established and emerging voices in the world of film.
