Discover the Joy of Walking Soccer: A Game-Changer for Seniors in Victoria

Have you heard of "walking soccer"? It's a modified version of soccer that is more accessible, especially for older adults or those with limited mobility. In walking soccer, players must keep at least one foot on the ground at all times, emphasizing strategy, positioning, and passing. Running is not allowed, and there is no contact between players. Goalkeepers are also more protected, as players are not allowed in the goalkeeper's marked area.

The sport gained traction on the island when Rob Jonas introduced it to Parksville and reached out to Peter Denby, who was involved in seniors soccer in Victoria. Denby, initially skeptical, did some research and saw the popularity of walking soccer in Europe. At 82 years old, Denby's involvement in the running game was coming to an end, so he readily agreed to start the sport in Victoria.

The Gorge Soccer Association provided them with a field in Hampton Park for free in their first year, allowing them to start without relying on player fees. After a successful inaugural year, they became affiliated with the Gorge, and their team is now called the Gorge Striders. With 53 players paying an annual fee and more paying drop-in fees, the sport is growing in popularity.

Players have access to weekly scrimmages through the website, which streamlines the organizational tasks for Denby. The league is affiliated with the South Vancouver Island Classics' Soccer Association (SVICSA), where players can register and find more information. Providing activities like walking soccer for seniors is crucial, as it not only offers a strategic game but also serves as a mental health tool, promoting movement, socialization, and fresh air.

The 2025/2026 season will run from September to the end of March, with two co-ed teams in different skill divisions. The minimum age to participate is 50 for women and 55 for men, with hopes of expanding to all ages in the future. Walking soccer is a great way for seniors in Victoria to stay active, socialize, and enjoy the game in a modified, accessible format.
