Changing the Game: Empowering Girls Through Sports and Leadership

Ali Krieger, a two-time FIFA Women's World Cup champion, emphasized the importance of playing multiple sports during her upbringing. She believes that engaging in various sports not only helps develop different skills but also prevents burnout among athletes. Recognizing the high dropout rate of girls in sports by age 14, Gotham FC partnered with Dove on the "Keep Her In the Game" initiative. As part of this collaboration, a book titled "Changing the Game: A Playbook for Champions in Training" will be distributed to inspire young girls to stay active in sports and reach their full potential.

The book features personal stories from athletes like NWSL MVP frontrunner Esther Gotham, Midge Purce, and Rose Lavelle, highlighting their struggles and perseverance in the face of challenges. Gotham FC general manager Yael Averbuch West, who had to end her playing career due to ulcerative colitis, serves as a role model for young women, showing that success in sports can take various forms. The program has already attracted over 1,700 members, with a significant number attending Gotham FC games and engaging with the players.

The initiative aims to create a lasting impact on girls' participation in sports, encouraging them to not only play but also become future leaders in various fields. By providing opportunities for girls to engage with the game, the hope is to instill a deep love and involvement in sports that extends beyond the playing field. Through the "Keep Her In the Game" program and the distribution of the book, Gotham FC seeks to inspire a new generation of female athletes and leaders who will shape the future of sports and beyond.
