1/ST RACING Takes Stand for Horse Welfare: Suspends Signal to Puerto Rico

Starting this weekend, 1/ST RACING will no longer provide the simulcast signal from Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita Park to Hipódromo Camarero in Puerto Rico due to concerns about horse welfare and safety at that racetrack. This decision was made in collaboration with horsemen's groups in Florida and California after previous efforts to improve horse care in Puerto Rico were not successful. Aidan Butler, President of 1/ST, emphasized the importance of prioritizing horse safety, welfare, and post-racing retirement in their business dealings.
The Florida Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and the Thoroughbred Owners of California expressed their support for 1/ST RACING's decision to suspend the racing signal to Puerto Rico. They highlighted the need for accountability and meaningful change in the treatment of Thoroughbreds on the island. Additionally, 1/ST announced that license holders who ship or sell horses to Puerto Rico will no longer be allowed to race or train at 1/ST facilities.
To support the safety and welfare of racehorses currently in Puerto Rico, 1/ST will donate $100,000 to the Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare. Bill Nader, President of Thoroughbred Owners of California, emphasized the importance of putting the horse first and commended 1/ST RACING for taking a principled stand. Previous efforts by 1/ST to address welfare and safety concerns for horses transported to Puerto Rico led to policy changes but revealed insufficient funding for aftercare.
Despite previous meetings with Puerto Rico's Racing Commission and Hipódromo Camarero to address welfare and safety concerns, significant issues persist, prompting 1/ST to implement new policy actions. Since 2019, 1/ST has been implementing industry-leading measures to enhance horse and rider safety and welfare, resulting in improved safety records at Santa Anita Park, Gulfstream Park, and their training facilities.
