Uniting Communities Through Soccer: The Story of KCK United

Rachel Henderson, a reporter for KSHB 41, focuses on neighborhoods in Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties. If you have a story idea, feel free to share it with Rachel. Our Let’s Talk Wyandotte County event brought us to KCK United, a local soccer club dedicated to uniting players in Kansas City, Kansas. Founded by Josh Wikler and Bee Brandenburgh five years ago, the faith-based club has grown to over 300 members, ranging from kindergarten to high school seniors. Derik Salas, a rising junior at Turner High School, describes the club as a close-knit family where players and coaches support each other.

Emily Velasquez, a rising senior at Schlagle High School, has been part of KCK United since her freshman year. Despite playing without her older sister this year, Emily still feels the strong sense of community within the club. With 26 countries represented in KCK United, the club serves as a unifying force for individuals from diverse backgrounds. Josh Wikler emphasizes the importance of inclusivity and providing opportunities for everyone to feel part of a team, both on and off the field.

The community spirit at KCK United extends beyond soccer matches, with the club actively engaging in community service and team outings. Josh Wikler expresses the club's commitment to working with more community organizations in the future. KCK United aims to create a welcoming environment where players of all backgrounds can come together and feel a sense of belonging. For more information about KCK United, visit their website.
