Rafiq Bhatia, a New York guitarist and composer, is known for his jazz background and soundtracking work with Son Lux. His upcoming solo album, Environments, showcases his improvisational skills and desire to explore new musical territories. Bhatia's quest is to make the guitar sound less like a guitar by experimenting with different techniques and effects.
Bhatia's musical journey led him to reconsider his relationship with the guitar and embrace improvisation in a more intimate and instinctual setting. He draws inspiration from artists like Mad Lib, Flying Lotus, and Jimi Hendrix, who have pushed the boundaries of studio production and sound manipulation. Bhatia's exploration of the guitar's potential led him to create a unique sound he calls "ghost guitar," which involves pitch-shifting and reverb effects to create a breath-like quality in the music.
In collaboration with Eventide, Bhatia developed a custom H90 Harmoniser multi-effects pedal that allows him to achieve a wide range of sounds and textures. His pedalboard also includes a Klon KTR, Strymon Iridium amp, and Z.Vex Fat Fuzz Factory, which he uses to shape his sonic palette. Bhatia's guitar of choice is a custom Flipperkaster built by luthier Flip Scipio, known for crafting instruments for music legends like Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, and Paul Simon.
