Baltic Focus: Unveiling the Future of Baltic-Nordic Film Collaboration

The Norwegian International Film Festival's industry event, New Nordic Films in Haugesund, has unveiled the Baltic Focus program and six Baltic projects in development for potential partners at the Nordic Co-Production Market on August 20. The selected projects from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania offer a mix of genres and themes that appeal to Nordic and international co-producers and financiers.
Estonia presents "Beatrice," a sci-fi romance by Vallo Toomla, and the historical drama "Silverwhite" by Martti Helde. Latvia showcases "Legato" by Ilze Burkovska Jacobsen and "The Sorcerer's Eye" by Aik Karapetian. Lithuania features "Flood" by Jorūnė Greičiūtė and "I'm Going to Change the World" by Inesa Kurklietytė. These projects will be pitched at the Nordic Co-Production Market, along with a roundtable on Co-Production Opportunities on August 21.
The Baltic Focus aims to foster collaboration between the Baltic and Nordic film industries, promoting talent discovery and co-productions. The event will bring together professionals from both regions to explore filming opportunities and discuss potential partnerships. The Baltic countries' cultural and geographical proximity to the Nordics creates a natural connection that can lead to increased collaboration and co-productions in the future.
The six Baltic projects lined up for the Nordic Co-Production Market offer a diverse range of stories and styles. "Beatrice" combines emotional depth with sci-fi elements set in a near-future world affected by climate change. "Silverwhite" explores overlapping eras and universal themes of identity and resilience. "Flood" delves into existential fears through a Baltic-Scandinavian co-production. "I'm Going to Change the World" follows an 11-year-old's journey of self-discovery in the big city. "Legato" tells a coming-of-age story of a teenager reconnecting with her roots, while "The Sorcerer's Eye" is a family adventure involving art and mythology.
These Baltic projects offer unique storytelling perspectives and thematic depth that appeal to a wide audience. The collaboration between Baltic and Nordic filmmakers opens up new possibilities for creative exchange and artistic innovation. The Baltic Focus event marks a significant step towards strengthening the ties between the Baltic and Nordic film industries, paving the way for future collaborations and co-productions.
